Do you think it is possible to be completely honest when writing- whether that be in a blog, in a letter, in an email? Where does tact kick in and honesty go out the window?
Do we present different parts of ourselves to different people in different situations? Is that okay, or is that being fake?

I think you can have both. Tact is all about how you phrase the truth. Example, a friend asks you if that dress makes her butt look big.
ReplyDeleteTruth: Yes.
Tact: "I don't think that dress does you any favors. I bet you can find something better. Let's try another store. Yeah, more shopping!"
Jen, you crack me up! So true though.
ReplyDeleteTo answer the second part of your post, I think it is perfectly ok to present different parts of ourselves to different people in different situations. For example, at work I need to present a competent, professional part of myself. My coworkers know I'm a football fan, but I don't get into the "WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU'RE RUNNING THREE PLAYS STRAIGHT UP THE MIDDLE FOR TWO DINKY YARDS???" side of myself here. Some people/situations may require different things from us, like being sensitive and understanding with a friend who's having a rough time, or taking charge in a group situation where no decisions are getting made. I don't think that's fake, I just think it is being well-rounded and able to adapt as the situation warrants. If you constantly change who you are at the core based on who you are hanging out with, that's when you run into problems. But people are varied, and different friends will naturally bring out different strengths and interests in us.
AT, well said. I couldn't agree more.
